PTE Scoring Explained

What your overall and skill scores really mean — and why two students with similar skill scores can get different results.

Overall score

Reported on a 10–90 scale. Pearson’s score guide says it reflects your performance across the entire test and is not an average of the four communicative skill scores.

Communicative skills

Speaking, Writing, Reading and Listening — each also on a 10–90 scale. Each skill score is built from every task that assesses that skill, including integrated tasks from other parts of the test.

Integrated questions

One response, two skill scores

Pearson: “The scores on these questions contribute to the score of both communicative skills that are assessed at the same time.” These are the integrated tasks listed on Pearson’s format pages.

Question weighting

What we know — and what nobody outside Pearson knows

Pearson publishes, for every task, the skills it contributes to and the scoring method. It does not publish a per-question weighting table. What we can say with confidence:

  • Integrated tasks affect two skill scores, so weaknesses there are “double exposure”.
  • Partial-credit tasks reward every correct element — a partly right answer still counts.
  • Some tasks carry penalties for wrong selections (Multiple Choice, Multiple Answers; Highlight Incorrect Words).
  • Correct/incorrect tasks (e.g. single-answer multiple choice) give no partial credit.
Why similar scores ≠ same outcome

Two students, both 65 in Speaking

Student A

Fluent, but vague Describe Image and Retell Lecture content. Losses concentrated in content.

Student B

Strong content, but loses the ends of sentences in Repeat Sentence — which also affects Listening.

Illustrative example. Same number, different cause, different fix — and different knock-on effects on other skills.

Your overall score tells you WHAT happened.

Scoring myths

Common PTE scoring myths

No. Pearson’s score guide states the overall score “is not an average calculation of the communicative skills scores” — it reflects performance across the whole test.
