Respond to a Situation: How to Answer in Role
The most common mistake is describing the situation instead of responding to the person in it. Here’s a simple framework.
Last verified: 26 September 2026
Pearson describes this task as responding to an everyday situation of up to about 60 words, with a 40-second response. Content is part-scored for relevance and appropriateness.
Framework: WHO – WHAT – HOW
- WHO am I speaking to? (friend, lecturer, manager, neighbour)
- WHAT do I need to achieve? (apologise, request, explain, suggest)
- HOW formal should I be?
Then speak in role: greet → state the issue → give a reason → propose a solution → close politely.
