New PTE Speaking Tasks Explained

Summarize Group Discussion and Respond to a Situation — what happens, how long you get and what is assessed.

Last verified: 26 September 2026

Summarize Group Discussion

You listen to a discussion of about three minutes between three people, then have 10 seconds to prepare and 2 minutes to summarise it in your own words. Pearson assesses content (including how the speakers’ ideas relate), pronunciation and oral fluency. It contributes to Listening and Speaking.

Respond to a Situation

You read and hear a description of an everyday situation of up to about 60 words, get 10 seconds to prepare, and give a 40-second spoken response. Pearson assesses content (relevance and appropriateness), pronunciation and oral fluency.

Both tasks have their content part-scored by human experts, so specific, relevant responses matter more than memorised scripts.

Exam formats, scoring and visa rules can change. Always verify important information with Pearson PTE and the Department of Home Affairs.
