Australian PTE Requirement Changes from 7 August 2025

Home Affairs introduced new PTE Academic component scores for Competent, Proficient and Superior English for tests taken on or after 7 August 2025.

Last verified: 26 September 2026

For PTE Academic tests taken on or after 7 August 2025, Home Affairs lists new minimum component scores. Tests taken on or before 6 August 2025 keep the previous thresholds and may be used until 6 August 2028, inclusive, depending on the visa subclass.

  • Competent: Listening 47, Reading 48, Writing 51, Speaking 54 (previously 50 each).
  • Proficient: Listening 58, Reading 59, Writing 69, Speaking 76 (previously 65 each).
  • Superior: Listening 69, Reading 70, Writing 85, Speaking 88 (previously 79 each).

Home Affairs also states it does not accept tests delivered completely online; PTE Academic must be taken in a secure test centre.

Scores as at 7 October 2026, from the Department of Home Affairs English language pages (immi.homeaffairs.gov.au/help-support/meeting-our-requirements/english-language). Requirements vary by visa subclass, so always check the current Home Affairs page. For migration advice, speak to a registered migration agent.

Exam formats, scoring and visa rules can change. Always verify important information with Pearson PTE and the Department of Home Affairs.
