Why Your PTE Score Is Stuck (and How to Find the Real Reason)
If you keep scoring within a few points of your last attempt, more practice is rarely the answer. Here’s how to diagnose what is actually holding you back.
Almost every student who contacts us after two or three attempts says a version of the same thing: “I practised every day and my score barely moved.” That isn’t a motivation problem. It’s a diagnosis problem.
PTE Academic produces an overall score and four communicative skill scores. Those numbers tell you what happened on test day. They don’t tell you why. Two students with the same Speaking score can be losing marks for completely different reasons — one to long pauses, the other to vague content in Describe Image. Give them the same practice plan and at least one of them will stay stuck.
The three patterns we see most often
1. One habit affects several tasks at once
Many PTE tasks are integrated: Pearson says their scores contribute to more than one skill. Repeat Sentence feeds Listening and Speaking. Write From Dictation feeds Listening and Writing. So a single weakness — for example, losing the second half of what you hear — can pull down two skill scores at the same time. Students then “fix” each skill separately and never touch the shared cause.
2. Practising what feels productive, not what moves the score
It’s natural to practise tasks you are good at. They feel rewarding. But hours spent on single-answer multiple-choice questions, which are marked correct or incorrect only, rarely move a score the way disciplined Write From Dictation or Fill in the Blanks practice can.
3. Templates that stopped working
Since 7 August 2025, Pearson says the content of seven task types — including Describe Image, Retell Lecture, Write Essay and the two new speaking tasks — is part-scored by human experts as well as AI. A memorised script that says nothing specific about the image or lecture is a risk, not a shortcut.
How to diagnose yourself this week
- Write down your last two sets of skill scores side by side. Which skill moved least?
- List the question types that feed that skill (use our PTE Exam 2026 guide).
- Record yourself on Read Aloud, Repeat Sentence and Describe Image. Listen back for pauses, restarts and filler content.
- Do 20 Write From Dictation items and count errors by type: missing words, spelling, plurals, tense endings.
- Time one full Reading section. Where did the minutes go?
You’ll usually find one or two patterns that explain most of the gap. That’s where your next two weeks should go — not into “full mock tests every day”.
When to get a second opinion
If you’ve sat the test more than once, or you’re a few points short of a visa or university threshold, a structured diagnosis saves time and money. That’s exactly what the free PTE X-Ray is designed for.
